They are more active at night than during the day, but are still more active than most other loach species during the day. Zebra loaches are omnivorous and can tolerate smaller tanks with some fluctuations in water temperature. They prefer to live in small groups and cruise the tank together the zebra loach is an endangered species and is being unsustainably harvested from the Western Ghats to supply the international aquarium pet trade. As of 2011, the IUCN Red List Status for the zebra loach was Endangered (EN) (B2ab(iii)). There have been no successful cases of breeding zebra loaches in home aquariums, which means that all specimens have been removed from their natural habitat.
