Maingano cichlids are carnivorous and require a lot of protein in their diet, which can include frozen or live food like bloodworms, as well as pellets or flakes formulated for them. They are territorial animals with a feisty temper that can be virulent against other territorial species and provoke heated fights. Dominant males can be particularly aggressive and may fight each other intensely, sometimes resulting in the submission or even death of one of the combatants.
