Lemon Oscars are intelligent, attractive, and can be popular aquarium fish for intermediate aquarists. They are often sold as juveniles, but they grow quickly and can become efficient predators. They are also known to interact with their keepers beyond the tank, which can make them popular. However, they can be territorial and aggressive, so it is important to choose tank mates carefully. Some recommend avoiding small or passive fish, and instead choosing larger, robust companions like other cichlids, large catfish, and certain plecos. If given enough space, they can do well in a mixed community of large fish.
