Chocolate shrimp are elongated in shape, with five pairs of legs and a segmented carapace that ends in a fan-shaped tail for swimming. They are usually 2–3 cm in size.
Chocolate shrimp prefer clean water with a pH of 6.5–8.0 and a temperature of 14–30°C (57–86°F), but are most comfortable at a moderate room temperature of around 72°F. They are omnivorous and can live for 1–2 years under ideal conditions.
