Green Texas Cichlids are open breeders that lay eggs and are very prolific. Females release 1–5 eggs at a time, and males then swim over to the eggs and release seminal fluid on them. This process is repeated until the female has released about 2,000 eggs. Both parents help with the eggs, but the male spends more time patrolling the territory, while the female spends more time fanning the eggs. After about four days, the eggs hatch into wrigglers with yolk sacs, and after another week, the yolk sacs are absorbed and the wrigglers become free-swimming fry. Both parents will protect the fry, but juveniles may be susceptible to intestinal diseases.
